How to post a job?
How to Post your job and hire a tradesman overview
Simply click the “Post a Job” button on the blue link bar above and follow the directions. You will be asked to fill in a few boxes describing the work you want done. Select how many tradesmen you want to hear from and if you would like them to contact you directly by phone or only through the internal email system. You can add photos once your job has been posted.
We monitor the site very closely so once we have checked your job (normally within a few minutes), we notify all relevant tradesmen in your area.
Each time a tradesman initiates contact with you, we list them in your member’s area and provide you with a link to their profile page. You are notified by email when this happens.
Once you have decided which tradesman to employ, you need to close your job. Simply come back to your member’s area (which is accessible through the “sign in“ at the top right of each page) and click the “Close Job” button. Or, if you are conversing with the tradesman through the internal email system, click the “accept quote” button within the email. Either action will close your job through the system, so you will no longer receive contact from other tradesmen.

Type of tradesman
Firstly you will be asked to select the type or tradesman you are looking for from a drop down list, we aim to list tradesman for all types of Building & Home improvements. If the type of tradesman you are looking for is not listed here please just drop us an email to let us know so we can add them asap : firstname.lastname@example.org
Next we ask you to give the job a title, try and keep it short and concise; there is a limit on how many words you can use. (4 – 50 characters)
- Re-wire home extension
- Fit new water boiler
- Replace garden fencing
Now to the job description … The more information you give to the description of the job the better. The tradesman can then give a more accurate assessment of time and cost. There is no limit to the amount of words you can add in job description area so don’t be shy, just describe the job in as much detail as you can.
It helps to include:
- Time frames or start dates
- Preferences regarding materials
- Any sizes
- If any specific skills are required
- If you want to see certificated qualifications
We advise against putting any contact details in here as this is published publicly on the site
Your Postcode / Town
When you enter your postcode your town will automatically show in the box underneath. We don’t need a full address as we use Google maps to show the area your postcode represents, this is enough for the tradesman to know if you are in the area they cover.
How many tradesmen would you like to hear from?
Next you choose how many tradesmen you want to choose from. We usually recommend 3 tradesmen as a maximum. You can however change this setting later from your members’ area.
How would you like the tradesmen to contact you ?
Here you can request that the tradesmen contact you directly by phone. We list those who have requested your tel. numbers in your member’s area and provide you with a link to their profile page. Obviously you have the ability to remove your tel number at any time.
Alternatively, you can choose that the tradesmen contact you only through your secure internal email system.
Your username will be published publicly on the site, some people like to use aliases, while others are happy to use their own name. You can have spaces in between words here if you want, for example :
- Mary Johnston
- Love Bug
Usernames have to be unique so that you are not confused with another “Mary Johnston or “Love Bug” throughout the site. If you find the name you want to use is not available you could just add a number at the end e.g.
- Mary Johnston 7
Your Password is keep private within the system, we recommend you keep a note of it as you will need it to access your members area when you want to check for quotes etc.
Don’t worry too much if you forget your password; either use the “forgotten Password” in the sign up box on the top right of each page or drop us an email and we will sort it out for you : email@example.com
Your Email Address
You will be asked for an email address so we can let you know when tradesmen initiate contact. We take your privacy and security very seriously. The only time your email address is given out is if you click “accept quote” (which appears within the emails you receive from tradesmen) we then forward the email address you have entered in the system to your chosen tradesman. At this point we send you an email with the tradesman’s contact details too.
What is my profile page?
A unique profile page for you/your company is included with your membership. This page showcases your ratings as well as any company information, certifications and photos of your work that you provide.
Your profile page is sent to the customer every time you buy a job lead and we also ensure that it appears near the top of the list when someone searches for your company name on sites like Google. We’ve found that tradespeople with a full profile are 3 times more likely to win work.
Also, if you already have your own website, we recommend that you add a link to your profile page so your other potential customers can see the ratings you’ve earned.
How do I update/change my profile page?
To update or change your profile page, log in to your account and click the ‘Web profile’ tab. From there you can update any element of your profile page including your company description, profile picture and cover image. If you haven’t already selected your main trade, you’ll be prompted to do this when you log in.

- company description
- primary trade
- photo gallery
- trades & services
- work area
- Part P, Gas Safe, TrustMark and SafeContractor certificates / accreditations.
How do I upload photos of my past work?
To upload photos of your work, log in to your account and select ‘Account’ and then ‘My photos’. Then click the ‘Choose file’ button to select the photos stored on your computer. The photos you upload will displayed on your profile page.
How do I view my profile page?
To view your profile page, log in to your account and select ‘Account’ and then ‘My website’. The link to your profile page is displayed at the top of this screen. Click the link to view your profile page as it appears to the public.
To view your profile page using the mobile app, just select ‘My Website’ from the main navigation and you will see the mobile version of your profile page.
How do I log in to my account?
What if I have forgotten my password?
If you have forgotten your password or need to change it for any reason, you may change your password by clicking on the forgot password link.
How do I change my password?
You may also change your password by logging in to your account and visiting ‘Account > Account details’ and clicking the ‘Change password’ button.
How do I change/update my contact details?
To change your contact details, log in to your account and select ‘Account’ and ‘Account details’. From there you can edit your contact info or change your address.
To change your contact details using the mobile app, select ‘Contact details’ from the main navigation.
How do I change/update my trade, skills or work area?
Your default postcode, work area and trade/skills were selected during sign-up. You can change these settings at any time by logging in to your account and selecting ‘Edit job lead settings’ from your main ‘Job Lead’ screen.
Note: Your work area is circular by default. Drag the markers on your area map to refine your work area into any shape you would like.
How do I change/update my payment details?
If you’ve paid your membership or purchased a lead using a credit or debit card, the card details have been stored securely for future purchases. To change the card used, log in online and head to the ‘Membership & Invoices’ section under ‘My account’. You’ll notice an ‘Update card’ link within the ‘Billing details’ section. Click this link and follow the on-screen instructions to update your card.
Note: You may also be prompted to change your card during your next lead purchase. If you’re shown a prompt, simply click the ‘Pay with a different card’ link and follow the instructions.
How do I change/update my company details?
To change your company details, log in to your account, select ‘Account>Account details’ and click the ‘Edit personal details’ button.
Note: We cannot change the company details on invoices that have already been issued. If your company details change within the fiscal year, the new details will appear on the next scheduled invoice.
How much does Recommend A Builder cost?
We have a low cost membership of £8.99 inc VAT, which has no contract, no tie in and a free one month on intital sign up. No other charges.
What is included with membership?
You membership includes, your own marketing page, your personal account and access to all the jobs available on recommend a builder.
What do I need to sign up?
To sign up with Rated People, you must provide us with the following:
- Name of your business
- Your business address (where your business operates from)
- Your first name and last name
- Your date of birth
- Your personal address (If you run your business from home, we’ll only need one address.)
Note that both your business and personal address cannot be located at a PO Box or virtual address.
- Your contact details (phone number and email address)
- Your primary trade, type of business and number of employees (including yourself)
- Details of your valid UK debit or credit card (to load into our system and allow you to buy job leads and pay membership which secures reduced lead prices and other benefits)
